Popular Science is reporting that a piece of bread, dropped by a passing bird, has managed to damage the Large Hadron Collider.
"The bird dropped some bread on a section of outdoor machinery, eventually leading to significant over heating in parts of the accelerator. The LHC was not operational at the time of the incident, but the spike produced so much heat that had the beam been on, automatic failsafes would have shut down the machine."

My brother and sister-in-law officially received their Australian permanent residency visas last week.
Ideas on what to get them for Christmas? Not too cheesy/soppy, I think we're going to have enough of that already this coming Christmas. Also can't get them anything huge, as they going to send most of their stuff in a packing crate, and obviously space will be limited.
Something to do with photos/memories is obviously a thought, but that is difficult because I'm only getting home a week before Christmas, and all our family photos is at home. I thought about a digital photo frame, but damn, those things are expensive!

Most distant gamma-ray burst spotted A violent explosion picked up by a NASA satellite earlier this year is the oldest object ever seen by astronomers, its light having been emitted some 13 billion years ago. At that time the universe was roughly 5 percent of its present age and the big bang was a fairly recent occurrence, having taken place just 600 million years earlier.

Naked mole rat might help win the fight against cancer Contact inhibition regulation in naked mole rats might help scientists explain why these animals never get cancer.
Infrared spectroscopic observations of the Moon provide evidence revealing that it may not be as dry as assumed.

So being crazy busy is not an excuse for not posting in like ages, but there it is. I have been, and am still. But I'm planning to give my LJ a bit of an overhaul (I've been giving myself one, but more about that in another post). Since I'm unfortunately not going to have time for Nanowrimo this year, the least I can do is to start writing in my LJ again.
Hello world!

Excellent. Disturbing. Thought-provoking. South African through and through. (which made my heart very happy)
The fact that I have only now discovered the wonderfulness and awesome of Generation Kill saddens my greatly.
If you had told me beforehand that I would be totally and utterly in love with a tv show that is about marines (yes, and some of them are *actual marines* driving around in humvees in Iraq I would not have believed you (but now that you've clicked the links I think you understand why :p)
